Lodestone
by Kevin Lane.
Chapter 22
It was backlit by the moon, the corpse standing upon his threshold. The details of his midnight caller were mercifully left ambiguous: a nearly fleshless face, matted hair that had fallen away in patches, time-eaten garments faded to grey in the darkness. Fleshless fingers ripped at the front of its own chest. The burial tunic came away like old cobwebs, disintgrating to dust. Dangling amid the exposed ribs a locket shimmered, suspended on a silvery chain. The creature yanked the necklace free with a savage jerk of its claw.
